RESTORATION OF FLUVIAL DYNAMICS IN LARGE RIVERS: FROM BENCHMARKING TO SCENARIO DESIGN
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_column_text]
Summary
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”5/6″][vc_column_text]This study aimed at proposing sustainable restoration targets for degraded large rivers, balancing the recovery of diminished river-floodplain interactions while taking into account current human constraints. A methodology was developed for the prioritization of objectives and measures for process-based river restoration in heavily modified European large rivers. This methodology was applied to specific case studies in European large rivers. Results from the Upper Rhine River (Germany&France), the Allier River (France) and the Ebro River (Spain) identified key rejuvenation processes that are now lost and whose recovery should be the objective of proposed process-based river restoration. This thesis has demonstrated that the proposed methodology is applicable to different fluvial contexts. Besides, the extensive set of data generated for diachronic analyses, selection of restoration targets, and assessment of scenarios could be employed in other case studies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_column_text]

Those four years allowed me to deepen my knowledge in the fields of river restoration, biogeomorphology and freshwater ecology. Besides, I could also develop new skills in modelling and field work. Professors and supervisors offered me their experience, encouragement and positivism. Thanks to the possibility of international stays, I had the opportunity of working with the brilliant teams of the Department of Wetland Ecology in Rastatt (Germany), and the Department of Land Morphology and Engineering in Madrid (Spain). Last but not least, I had the support through ups and downs of my FLUVIO colleagues, with which I hope to maintain a long lasting friendship.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”6/6″][vc_single_image image=”4446″ img_size=”608×54″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”5/6″][vc_column_text]River Restoration, Biogeomorphology, Freshwater Ecology, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Awareness, Project Management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Spanish, English, French[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”6/6″][vc_single_image image=”4445″ img_size=”608×54″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”5/6″][vc_column_text]Current position: Researcher in the Environmental Restoration Department, Centre of Studies and Experimentation in Public Works (CEDEX), www.cedex.es
